Upright
Something has run its full course and its ending clears space for what comes next.
Death. Something has run its full course and its ending clears space for what comes next. Thirteenth: the ending that was never optional. What is finishing has already finished; the only open question is how gracefully it is let go. Its sign is Scorpio, which goes underneath: what is concealed, what is intense, and a refusal to accept the surface account of anything. Being Water, it resolves below the surface, on feeling rather than argument. Its keyword range runs through a true ending, transformation, transition, release, and clearing the ground.
Reversed
An ending is being fought instead of allowed, and the stagnation is costly.
Death reversed. An ending is being fought instead of allowed, and the stagnation is costly. Under Mars, it works by force and initiative, direct and fast and wholly indifferent to whether the timing is comfortable. Reversed here, the timing is the problem rather than the substance: the right thing arriving early, late, or stalled short of where it was going. Its keyword range, to be read here as difficulty, delay, or a lesson not yet learned: resistance to change, stagnation, fear of the ending, decay, and clinging to what is over.
About the Tarot
A 15th-century Italian card game that was turned to fortune-telling only 350 years later.
The upright and reversed meanings here follow the mainstream Rider-Waite-Smith reading tradition. A reversed card is treated as the same force blocked, turned inward, or overexpressed - not simply as its opposite.
