Hagalaz. A sudden, uncontrollable disruption is clearing ground for something new. Hail: the first rune of the second aett and the one that breaks the pattern. Destruction that arrives from outside, cannot be argued with, and melts into water that feeds the ground. Rune 9 of the twenty-four. It is first of Hagal's Aett, the middle eight - the aett of disruption and testing, where what is false is broken so something truer can stand. Upright, the stave stands in its clear aspect and can be worked with directly. Its keyword range runs through disruptive change, a natural upheaval, a wake-up call, and uncontrollable force.

The meanings used here are reconstructed from three later medieval sources - the Old English, Norwegian and Icelandic Rune Poems - which give a verse for each rune.
